The Candy, Man

My kids’ candy bags overflow—and having that much sugar isn’t good for them or for me. (I’ve been known to sneak a Snickers or two out of their bags when no one’s looking.)

Fortunately, there are a few options for putting the candy to good use, as I hate the thought of just tossing it in the trash. Here’s where our goodies are going this year:

1.    Save some aside for holiday baking. The Hershey’s candy bars can be repurposed in s’mores bars and M&Ms are great in cookies. Colorful candies like Smarties and Skittles can be used to gussy up the gingerbread house. And caramels can be utilized for making caramel apples, of course.
2.    Sweeten a soldier’s day. Our school district is having a candy drive, which will ship the leftover goodies off to our troops. Why not make their days a little brighter—my kids will hardly miss a few handfuls of candy.
3.    Bribe your colleagues. I work from home, and since my colleague (the family dog) can’t have chocolate, it doesn’t quite work for me. But my husband is welcome to share some treats with his coworkers—many of whom do not have kids to bring home some booty that they can plunder.
4.    Enjoy some ourselves. Hey, it’s Halloween—live a little!

What are you planning to do with your Halloween bounty?

I definitely plan to use some of the leftover candy to make cookies—with the holiday season coming up, it's great to have a few "raw materials" on hand for whipping up a batch of cookies.

    Q. Around 1980 there was a cover recipe in either Woman's Day or Family Circle for beef rouladen with scrambled eggs and carrot. I lost all my favorite recipes in Hurrican Andrew in 1992. Does anyone have this? I have tried both magazine archives to no avail. Thanks. Chef 123
