We're having friends over this weekend, and I just found this fun article about party planning tips.

What are your tips for party-planning success? My husband and I always add a wine-pairing component to our get-togethers; it's fun and a great conversation starter!

I try to make several things that can be made ahead so that I can pretty much just set them out and  then only have a couple things that need a little extra work while the guests are there.  I agree about making more then what you think your guests will eat just in case, and also so they don't feel like they can't eat because there is not enough.

Always make more food than you think you need!  Assume that people will eat at least 4-6 servings of hors d'oeuvres at an appetizer party, but plan for 7-8 servings per person just in case what you've made is so irresistible that they can't help themselves!

Hey there. I'm trying to start a blog on exactly this. I have only three posts so far but I'm trying to update it once or twice a week. Take a look when you get a chance. I personally think that appetizers that are quick and easy to make are the best way to go. Entrees don't have to be fancy, especially since you want to spend time with your guests. Good appetizers and a killer cake or dessert work for me. Let me know what you think. http://intimategatherings.blogspot.com is my blog.

I agree with Angelfoodie2: get things done ahead so you can enjoy being with the crowd. I usually leave a few small tasks that I can hand off to early guests--like opening the wine, slicing bread, setting the table etc. That way they'll have something to do as I pull off any last minute prep. Hope the party was a success, CoolCookie!

I prep the food in advance so I can enjoy the crowd. If someone asks to help me I always let them do something and it makes conversation go faster. Using a party theme helps as does sending out evites to see who all is coming. I have a beverage center and pass around the appetizers too. If anyone asks to contribute I let them bring something too.

After a lifetime of cooking in large "family" quantities; I found myself really challenged after becoming widowed. I've learned a few tricks about buying, storing, and cooking food for one and would like to hear from others on the subject.
