Source: My mothers 1958 Kerr Canning book

 

a wonderful relish that is good on pot roasts or anything!!!

 

 

Ingredients:

12 lbs chopped green tomatoes
3TBSP salt
8large onions
1 tsp pepper
3 TBSP dry mustard
1 TBSP cinnamon
1 TBSP allspice
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 qt vinegar
a few bayleaves
1 3/4 cps sugar
6 hot peppers
(I have on occassion added a few chopped jalepenos too, no seeds)

 

Directions:

chop tomatos, onions, peppers together and cover with the salt; let stand overnight. Drain, add the hot peppers which have been chopped, and spices tied loosely in a cheesecloth bag. Add sugar; allow to boil slowly until tender, (about 15 minutes) Pack into sterilized jars and seal at once, put on lids screwing down tight- Process in water bath at simmering tem (180 F) for 15 minutes

I lost my grandmother's chow chow recipe and could kick myself for not taking better care of it. This sounds a lot like hers and I am certainly going to try it this summer. Love chow chow with pinto beans, cornbread and onion.

Hey lynx, thanks for this wow-wow Chow-Chow, lol!  I've never had this ever but have heard of it.  So I am wild to try.  Can you eat it right away, or is it better after it sits on a shelf for a while?  Smileys

Sounds great although I doubt I'll ever need to make QUITE this much! I think I can divide it up and love it. Thanks for explaining it, first I thought it was for a dog! LOL :)

Kimi, I love this recipe!!  When you mention Chow-Chow to some folks, you get a puzzled look from them.  I grew up eating it as a condiment when my Mom made fresh greens.  The Pennsylvania Dutch use cabbage in their Chow-Chow.  Thank you so much for sharing this recipe with us.

Q. I would like to roast my turkey the day before and have it sliced and not have to deal with that clean up when guests are there. I can't find specific directions on how to do this to assure moist turkey when heating the next day. Do you slightly under cook so not to worry about drying out? I would be grateful for input from members who have experience cooking/slicing the bird a day early. Thanks...Grammylou
